Shaky Grounds: Tectonics and Volcanism Throughout Our Solar System - Lecture April 16 By Suffolk's Sean Tvelia

Earth’s continents and ocean basins move across the surface as described by plate tectonics and the same processes that allow these movements also produce one of Earth’s most fascinating geologic features: volcanoes.

 Volcanoe

Though many other planets and moons across the solar system have volcanoes, none of them indicate the presence of plate tectonics like Earth.

Do these planetary surfaces change? What causes their volcanoes?

In his highly illustrated lecture, Sean Tvelia, Associate Professor of Physical Science at Suffolk County Community College and NASA Solar System Ambassador, will explore how plate tectonics produces volcanoes on Earth and, using images from NASA’s latest missions, demonstrates how these processes compare with those occurring on other worlds.

Join Professor Sean Tvelia on Wednesday April 16 at 7 p.m. for Shaky Grounds: Tectonics and Volcanism Throughout Our Solar System, at the Amagansett Public Library.

The library is located at 215 Main St, Amagansett, NY 11930.
