Portfolio Preparation
PS30, “Portfolio Preparation”, is a course for adults who seek academic credit for college-level learning accomplished in non-traditional ways.
The non-traditional college is designed to provide adults with a vehicle for defining and demonstrating college-level learning derived from paid or volunteer work, home management, non-accredited training, travel, and independent study. Students will be provided with the necessary information and techniques for choosing a degree program and preparing a portfolio that describes and verifies the learning. The portfolio may be presented to the faculty for evaluation.
College-level learning, which must be clearly distinguished from “life experience”, is defined as skills, knowledge, and is demonstrably equivalent to the learning derived from credit-bearing courses. Evaluation of the portfolio for academic credit is not part of the course and is subject to a separate assessment fee at the time the portfolio is submitted.
Students considering enrollment in PS30 are required to attend an information meeting session on credit for prior learning. The session, which covers credit by examination, as well as portfolio assessment, is scheduled several times during the year at SCCC.
To find out when these meetings will be held and to register for an information session, call the Office of Adult Learner Academic Programs at (631) 451-4696.
