Synchronous Training — One-Day Workshop Agenda

The college is pleased to conduct this one-day hands-on training workshop on distance learning and the distance learning classroom and equipment. The agenda reflects the training staff's general plans for the workshop. Your needs and preferences during the workshop will determine the specific topics presented and discussed, the emphasis of activities, and the schedule.

Prior to the workshop faculty are asked to view a two-part Dallas CCC videoconference video entitled "Teaching at a Distance: A Workshop with Tom Cyrs". The video is intended to give a brief overview of synchronous distance education.

The workshop will be scheduled twice a year - intersession and summer session, hence, allowing the faculty member to develop the courses during the spring and fall semesters. The next scheduled training cycle is found at this link and in order to enroll contact the Associate Dean for College Instructional Technology (phone: 631-451-4656)

Goals and Objectives

The training staff has designed this workshop to prepare instructors and other personnel to use two-way interactive distance learning equipment and to meet the specific goals and objectives stated below.

Training Goals

  • Help each participant/instructor become knowledgeable and comfortable with the distance learning system.
  • Encourage participants to use all available resources in the satisfactory completion of the first goal; this includes other instructors and the training staff, during the workshop and during the school year.
  • Allow participants to determine the form and function of training; that is, modify training to accommodate their special needs and preferences.

Learning Objectives

  • Operate the distance learning system and its component parts (cameras, monitors, VCR, fax machine, instructor station controls).
  • Prepare and deliver a 10-minute lesson using the distance learning equipment.
  • Evaluate and apply feedback received about your lesson to improve your instructional effectiveness on the distance learning system.
  • Evaluate the lessons presented by other instructors and provide feedback to improve their instructional effectiveness using the distance learning system.
  • Identify the differences between traditional classroom instruction and the distance learning environment.
  • Effectively adapt your traditional instructional style, techniques, and methodology to the distance learning environment.
