Instructions for Student Dialup Service at SCCC

Preliminaries
These instructions are for students who wish to establish a telephone connection to the Suffolk County Community College Internet server, called the Osprey. This connection service, which is designed for use in conjunction with class work, provides full email and limited World Wide Web access. Web access is limited to the college domain; URLs outside the college domain are not accessible via this service. On the other hand, users can send and receive email from anywhere on the Internet.

Students who already have Internet access through a private Internet Service Provider (ISP) do not need to set up a dial-up connection directly to the Suffolk server. They can use their ISP connection to access their college mail and to up- and down-load web pages to their Suffolk accounts if they wish.

All college email accounts are accessible using any recent version of Internet browser by linking to PonyEspresso, the college's web entry to email. Again, the PonyEspresso pages are accessible from anywhere on the Internet. To use PonyEspresso your browser must be capable of running java applets. Recent versions of Netscape, Internet Explorer, and AOL have no trouble doing this.

If you would like to connect to PonyEspresso right now, click here.

In the same way, file tranfers can be done using any file transfer program from any connection to the Internet. For example, if you have an AOL account, you can use AOL's built in file transfer capability to publish webpages to your college account, or you can connect to AOL, minimize the AOL interface program, and then run any file transfer program, like WS_FTP95, to move files. You can also run a telnet program to connect to your suffolk account and get to the unix ($) prompt.

If you have no home connection to the Internet, or do not wish to use your home connection, and you need one for a course you are taking here at SCCC, then use the following instructions to dial into the Suffolk server.

Student Account
To use this dial-up service you must have a valid username and password, which all students are automatically assigned when they register at SCCC, and lose when they stop attending the college. Your username is constructed from the first four letters of your last name, first initial, and last two digits of your social security number. Your initial password consists of your birth date in mmddyy form (i.e., two digit month, day, and year). For example, student Joseph College, SSN 123-45-6700, who was born on June 7, 1967, has username collj00 and password 060767. When Joe uses his account for the first time he will be prompted to change his password to one that is at least 6 characters in length and contains at least one numeric character.

Home Computer
To successfully execute this connection procedure you must have a personal computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98 (if you are using Windows 98, the dialog boxes shown in these instructions will be slightly different from the ones you see on your screen), and having a properly configured modem installed. If your computer came with a modem, it is most likely set up properly for this procedure. You must also be a knowledgeable Windows operating system user.

The connection process requires a script file to be stored on your hard disk. You can download this file now by clicking here. Use the File Download text box to direct the system to save the file in your
C:\Program Files\Accessories directory.

Set up the Connection
Begin at the Windows desktop, and double click on My Computer. In the dialog box that is displayed, open the Dial-Up Networking folder, and within that folder, double click on the icon labeled Make New Connection. Once you have done all of that, you should see the following dialog box on your screen. In the first text box type in the name of your connection: SCCC - Remote Email Access. Then click on the Next button at the bottom of the dialog box.

The next dialog box asks for the telephone number of the server. The area code is 516 and the number is 854-3040. You need only type 8543040 in the text box labeled Telephone Number. Click on the Next button to continue.

There is nothing to do here but to click on the Finish button, thus completing the first phase of the connection procedure. Close all dialog boxes to return to the Desktop.

Configure the Connection
Go back into My Computer, and back into the Dial-Up Networking folder. There should now be a new icon called SCCC - Remote Email Access. Right click on that icon (i.e., click on it with the right-hand mouse button), and then left click on Properties in the pop-up menu that appears. Click on the Server Types tab at the top of the dialog box that you see on the screen. The following dialog box appears. Set the text box and all of the check boxes as they appear here, and then click on TCP/IP settings.

In the TCP/IP Settings dialog box, first choose to Specify Name Server Address by clicking on the the little circle as shown, and then type in the numbers exactly as shown in the figure below in the Primary DNS text box. Then click on the OK button.

Next, click on the tab labeled Scripting to display the following dialog box.

Click on the Browse button, and then find the SCCDialup.SCP file that you have previously stored in the C:\Program Files\Accessories directory on your hard drive. Click on the file name, then click on Open, then click on Edit, and you should see the following script:

proc main

delay 2
transmit "<cr>"
waitfor "username: "
transmit $USERID + "<cr>"
waitfor "password: "
transmit $PASSWORD + "<cr>"
waitfor "annex: "
transmit "ppp" + "<cr>"
waitfor "PPP.<cr><lf>"
endproc

Close the editor, click on OK, and close all dialog boxes. You are now ready to connect to the college server.

Connecting to the Server
To connect to the SCCC Internet server click on My Computer, then on Dial-Up Networking, and then on the SCCC - Remote Email Access icon. You will see the following dialog box. Type in your username and password, and, if you wish, click on the Save Password box so that you will not have to type your password every time you use this connection.

If you have the call waiting service on your telephone, you must disable it. To disable call waiting for all of your dialup connections, click on the Dial Properties button and disable call waiting as indicated in the dialog box that appears on your screen. Alternatively, you can disable call waiting for this connection by typing *70,8543040 in the Phone Number text box. Click on the Connect button to initiate connection to the Suffolk server.

While connection is in progress, you should see the dialog box shown below on your screen. You should hear the modem sounds of dialing and connecting, unless the sound is turned off on your modem. It may take a minute or two for the connection and login to complete successfully.

Once successfully connected to the Suffolk server, you will see the Connection Established dialog box. You may close this box. The dial-up icon should move to the status area of the taskbar (lower right-hand corner of your screen). If it does not, you can minimize this box, and it will move to the status area.

Now you are ready to run your browser or email program. When you wish to disconnect from the server, click on the dial-up icon in the status area of the taskbar and then click on the disconnect button. Do not leave your computer connected to the sever for long periods of time during which you are not using the Internet. You are tying up resources that other students may be waiting to use.
