Welcome to BY-LIST, the Suffolk Community College Biology Department List. We are glad to receive your subscription and we encourage you to participate in the discussions. Please save this message as it contains important subscription information and instructions on how to post messages to the list. The list is un-moderated Biology listserv which will allow for the academic and pedagogic exchange of ideas within the discipline for Biology faculty at Suffolk County Community College. We only ask that you follow these three guidelines:

  1. Please do not post personal messages.
  2. Mail from listservs can accumulate quickly and you might find a couple of hundred messages if you subscribe to a lot of listservs. If you have an account at the college, you have a limited amount of disk space to store your messages. Please maintain your mail.
  3. Be considerate. When you are posting a message, remember that there is a person behind every username. Lively debate is encouraged, rudeness is not.

HOW TO SEND MESSAGES TO THE LIST

The most confusing things about listservs is that there two different addresses. The "MAJORDOMO" address handles the administrative functions for the list. The "BY-LIST" list address is the address you use to post messages to the list.


To post a message on the BY-LIST list, send an e-mail message to "by-list@sunysuffolk.edu". Unlike many other lists, you will see a copy of your message on the list. Messages will usually be posted the next day, but there may be unforeseen circumstances where it might take a couple of days. If your message is not posted within that time frame, resend it.

MAJORDOMO COMMANDS

The following commands are currently available on BY-LIST:

UNSUBSCRIBE - to remove yourself from the list

WHO - to get a list of subscribers

LIST - to get a list of mailing lists available at SCCC

HELP - to receive a help file

END - to terminate processing (skipping signature, etc.)

To use these commands:

  1. Send an e-mail message to "majordomo@sunysuffolk.edu". PLEASE SEND COMMANDS TO THE MAJORDOMO ADDRESS, NOT THE BY-LIST ADDRESS.
  2. Leave the Subject line blank.
  3. Type the command in the body of the message. Use the following format:

    4. UNSUBSCRIBE by-list

    WHO by-list

    LIST

    HELP

    END
