Joint Admissions Agreement
and
Honors College at Adelphi University
Preface. The aims of the Suffolk County Community College [SCCC] Honors Program and the Adelphi University [AU] Honors College are quite similar. The Honors College at AU admits talented and motivated students who are willing to undertake a challenging program. Both programs, grounded in the tradition of the liberal arts, provide a vibrant intellectual core of courses for students in any area of study. Thus, it is no coincidence that many of the courses normally taken in the first years of study through AU's Honors College are equivalent to courses in the Honors Diploma Sequence at SCCC.
SCCC and AU offer the option of joint admissions to the Honors Program and Honors College. In addition, there is a detailed articulation of course equivalents to guide all SCCC students including those who might choose the Honors Certificate sequence at Suffolk or who might come to the idea of Honors somewhat late.
Joint Admission Agreement. Students admitted to the Honors Program and pursuing the Honors Diploma Sequence at SCCC may request consideration for joint admission to the Honors College at AU. Each SCCC Honors Program student, upon requesting joint admission, is given an interview with the Dean or Associate Dean of the Honors College at AU. A successful interview results in an offer of joint admission with a guarantee of a $6000 annual scholarship to the Honors College at AU. The final award requires:
1. Successful completion of the Honors Diploma sequence at Suffolk.
2. A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.
During the time that they are engaged in Honors at SCCC, students will have the opportunity to interact regularly with Honors students at AU in co-curricular cultural events such as special seminars, theater, and various other activities.
Honors Courses. All four of the Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars required for the Honors Program Diploma Sequence at SCCC fulfill requirements for the Honors College at AU helping to make the transition after two years an easy one.
Each of the SCCC Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars in Humanities fulfills one semester of AU Honors College Human Condition (0083-210). Each of the SCCC Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars in Social Science fulfills one semester of AU Honors College Conditions of Social and Political Life (0083-320). Each of the SCCC Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar in Mathematics or Science fulfills an AU Honors Science requirement.
Thus, each SCCC Honors Diploma student will have fulfilled a minimum of four of the five Sophomore and Junior level courses in the three areas required by the AU Honors College. The remainder of the required curriculum for Joint Admissions students, once they enter AU, depends in part on their course of study at SCCC. For most students the requirements will consist mainly of two semesters of the AU's Modern Condition, one senior seminar, and a senior thesis. Each student who applies for joint admission will be given individual counseling and advice to help create a well-designed program of major studies and electives.
