Frequently Asked Questions
Honors Program

  • WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HONORS?

In many ways the Honors Program is a “college within a college”. From the very first day you’ll sense a specialness – an espirit de corps – that is unique to a community college.

Honors students receive one-on-one advisement and scheduling, frequently avoiding long lines and inconvenience.

Honors classes never exceed twenty students. You’ll be interacting with your professors and peers in a manner more familiar to those at America’s most prestigious colleges.

Honors students attend special luncheons, functions and events that greatly enrich the college experience. Recently, through the Honors Program Scholar-in-Residence Series, students attended a reception for the First Secretary of the Cuban interest Section to the United States and were also guests of the Qatar Embassy to the United Nations in Manhattan.

All of the preceding – and more – is why the Honors Program is often described as College the way you always imagined it.

  • ARE THERE HONORS SCHOLARSHIPS?

Absolutely! The Honors Program is one of the best-endowed programs at Suffolk. Thanks to the generosity of the Suffolk Community College Foundation, every year five incoming freshman are awarded full tuition scholarships. In addition, through the Foundation’s support of the J. Robert Fisher Memorial scholarship, approximately ten half-tuition scholarships are awarded annually to both new and continuing students. The sole criteria for all Honors scholarship awards is academic merit.

  • WHAT ABOUT TRANSFERRING TO A FOUR YEAR SCHOOL AFTER GRADUATION?

Graduation from the Honors Program only enhances your transfer prospects. In fact, numerous colleges set aside “designated scholarships” – scholarships that are only available to graduates of a specific community college Honors Program.

In recent years graduates of the Honors Program have transferred to – in addition to SUNY colleges and local Long Island schools – the following universities; New York University, University of Maryland, University of Delaware, Cornell University, The College of William and Mary, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Scranton, University of Missouri, James Madison University, George Washington University and the University of Pennsylvania.

  • WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION?

The Honors Program is selective and competitive. Students applying to the Honors Program should have in the area of 1100 on the SAT and a 3.5 or B+ high school average. The Honors Program encourages all students who are close to these expectations to apply. In addition to grades, the Honors Program also considers an essay and letters of recommendation. Admission to the Honors Program is ultimately based on the whole student and the likelihood of academic success.

Students who are applying to the Honors Program from other colleges or who are currently attending Suffolk should have a minimum 3.2 grade point average.

Individuals who have been out of high school more than five years should contact the Honors Program office at (631) 451-4778.
