 Information Literacy Guide

Developed by the Grant Campus Library Faculty

This guide introduces students to the College Library Home Page and the concepts and strategies which promote information literacy.

Information literacy is a set of critical thinking skills which enables a person to determine what information is needed and how to locate, evaluate, and use it effectively.

Why is information literacy important?

Quite simply, we live in an age in which information is rapidly growing and changing.  Consider the following:

A weekday edition of The New York Times contains more information than a 17th century person would come across in a lifetime.

Over 1,000 new books are published daily across the world.

Over 9,000 periodicals are published in the United States alone.

Over 7 million pages are added daily to the existing billions of documents found on the Internet.

This guide will show you how to find information by developing effective search strategies.

Throughout this guide, some words or concepts appear in red or blue , and are underlined. Clicking your left mouse button on these "hyperlinks" will take you to a new page with related information.
