This site contains information
regarding the Department of Natural Sciences at the Michael J. Grant Campus of Suffolk
County Community College. The department consists of five
disciplines: Biology, Chemistry,
Earth
and Space Science, Oceanography, and Physics. Links on this page
lead to the course offerings and full-time faculty members within these disciplines.
The Department of Natural Sciences is comprised of twelve full-time faculty members and approximately fifty adjuncts, and is led by Donald R. Ferruzzi, Professor of Biology, as the Academic Chair and George Fortunato, Associate Professor of Biology, as the Assistant Academic Chair. Course offerings are mainly held in the Sagtikos Arts and Sciences Center and Paumanok Hall of the Grant Campus. These buildings contain well-equipped laboratories and classrooms utilized by the students. We are especially proud of the Robert L. Gibson Planetarium, named in honor of former NASA Chief Astronaut Robert L. Gibson, alumnus of Suffolk County Community College.
The campus offers a large selection of science courses for students majoring in a science discipline or students satisfying their liberal arts and science curriculum requirements. An Associate in Science Degree (A.S.), with options in Biology, Environmental Science/Forestry, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science and Physics are available. This degree prepares students for transfer to a baccalaureate degree program, generally in a professional field of endeavor. Not all these options can be attained at the Grant Campus. However, many of the courses required in these programs are offered.
