Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College
Welcome to Suffolk County Community College! Our community is pleased to have been chosen as the host location for the 2017 SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC)-East. We are especially honored to serve in this capacity, since this is the first time in the history of the event that SURC will be hosted by a community college.
I would like to publicly thank the members of our College SURC Steering Committee for their work overseeing all the details related to this exceptional event. I also want to express appreciation to our faculty who have filled a variety of roles including reviewing student abstracts as applications for conference inclusion are received, moderating oral presentation sessions, offering professional development sessions, and volunteering for roles within poster sessions and performance events. The success of SURC East is directly attributable to the effort put forth by all of these dedicated educators and volunteers.
Original research and creative activity are widely recognized as high-impact educational experiences that positively affect undergraduate students’ completion rates, career prospects and readiness for transfer and graduate study. Most SUNY campuses encourage such research and creative activity throughout the curriculum, in capstone experiences and/or internship placements. In addition, they invest in opportunities for students to present their work, thereby engaging critical audiences in student learning processes and honing the professional communication skills necessary for higher-order scholarship and career success.
This is an amazing opportunity for everyone involved and we look forward to sharing this student-focused event with you.
