The North suffered an estimated 23,000
casualties during the battle (killed,
wounded and captured) while the
South suffered an estimated 31,000. Wreckage of war, the bodies of the dead soldiers and 5,000 dead horses was a scene of terrible devastation.
The Civil War would rage on for two more terrible and tormenting years, but the Confederacy never recovered from the losses of Gettysburg.
President Abraham Lincoln dedicated the Gettysburg National Cemetery four months after the Battle with his Gettysburg Address speech.
When you visit Gettysburg today, most of the original buildings are still standing and they are marked with a plaque declaring them "Civil War Buildings". The bullet scars from the Union sharp shooters are still visible on many of the buildings.
