Academic Literacy Center

Islip Arts Building, Room 116

All college majors have one thing in common; there is a lot of reading required.  A strong foundation in literacy is essential for success in the classroom and in the workplace.  In the Academic Literacy Center, we provide SCCC students with the strategies they need to become confident and effective readers.  We can help with any type of text, regardless of the subject area.  Whether you need assistance with reading comprehension, vocabulary development, note-taking, study strategies, or time management we tailor tutoring sessions to meet your individual needs.

Drop-in tutoring and academic advisement hours are listed below.

Also, check out our workshop series below!

Reading Lab Courses

Students taking reading courses complete the lab component of their course in the Academic Literacy Center using the Connect Reading program.  This program provides an individualized curriculum that targets specific needs and allows for independent reading practice.  Lab instructors provide support and assistance during lab classes.

Reading tutoring, with a focus on metacognitive reading strategies, is available to current students on the Ammerman Campus through the Academic Literacy Center during drop-in hours.

Academic Advisement

Academic advisement in the Academic Literacy Center is available for all current Reading, College Seminar, and Education students on the Ammerman Campus.

If you need help building your schedule for the upcoming semester stop by the Academic Literacy Center during drop-in tutoring/advising hours.

We offer periodic workshops for Ammerman Campus students on topics like active reading skills and time management during the fall and spring semesters.

Other Services for Students
