Allen Keener is a graduate of Ohio University, MFA in fine art photography, Rochester Institute of Technology, BFA in advertising photography, and Randolph Community College, Certificate in Photofinishing. He joined the staff of the Suffolk County Community College Photographic Imaging program in 2000 as a full-time instructor. During his tenure at Suffolk he has served the department as Academic Chair, College Coordinator of the Photographic Imaging program and was promoted to full-professor in 2014. Professor Keener was awarded the Suffolk County Community College Governance Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013.

Before moving to Long Island, professor Keener worked as a professional photographer for nineteen years. During this time, he worked as a portrait and advertising photographer, as well as a photojournalist for several newspapers. Professor Keener began teaching as a graduate student at Ohio University, then after graduation at the University of Toledo, Appalachian State University, and Virginia Intermont college before joining Suffolk.
