Emergency Student Loans

Emergency Student Loan
The Emergency Student Loan Program is sponsored and funded by the Suffolk Community College Foundation, Inc. The purpose of the program is to allow the College to provide conveniently attainable short term loans to currently enrolled students for education related expenses that are unanticipated or deemed necessary for enrollment continuation. The responsibility for administering and managing the loan program is assigned to the respective Campus Director of Financial Aid and the Campus Business Officer on each campus.

Laptop Loaners

The College has arranged to make a limited number of college laptops and Chromebooks available to students who do not have access to one. Students may request a college laptop or Chromebook via MySCCC.

Mental Health Services

For students who may be experiencing psychological, emotional, social and/or behavioral issues or who want or need additional support during their time at Suffolk County Community College, we offer short term individual counseling, group counseling and mental health and wellness programming by licensed mental health professionals. For students who may need psychiatric or other specialized services, counselors can help coordinate referral to appropriate community providers. Students can visit the Mental Health and Wellness Services website for more information about our services, to make an appointment, or for other mental health and wellness related resources.

Family Service League
Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing provides one-time financial assistance to homeless individuals and at-risk homeowners in the Township of Islip. Eligible households can receive assistance with rent arrears, security deposits, and first month’s rent.

Family Shelter provides emergency housing services to homeless families placed through the Suffolk County Department of Social Services. The program accommodates homeless families with a safe environment and the support needed to secure permanent housing.

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program provides rental assistance to low-income families through Federal funds administered by the New York State Homes & Community Renewal (HCR).

Suffolk County Rent Assistance

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless
The Long Island Continuum of Care is designated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development to oversee the regional strategy for ending homelessness. The Continuum of Care envisions a community in which all members have access to safe, decent, and appropriate housing options.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
HEAP is a federally funded program that assists low-income New Yorkers with the cost of heating their homes. HEAP also offers an emergency benefit for households in a heat or heat related energy emergency.

Project Warmth

Project warmth

Project Warmth is an emergency assistance program administered by United Way of Long Island to help low-income families and individuals with energy emergencies. You may be eligible to receive a one-time grant to pay for heating costs.

Long Island Cares: The Harry Chapin Food Bank
Distributes food through a network of member agencies located in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, New York. Member agencies distribute food to individuals who need food assistance.

Domestic Abuse

is available from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Helpline offers information, referrals to resources for further help and emotional support. The Helpline is bilingual. Calls can be anonymous and confidentiality is respected. Provides resources and referrals to assist victims of domestic violence and to enhance services to victims of sexual assault.

Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS)
VIBS offers specialized counseling, advocacy and legal representation to victims of domestic violence, rape/sexual assault, child sexual abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking, witnesses to homicide and most recently, to Veterans suffering with PTSD.

New York State Job Bank

New York State Unemployment Insurance
Unemployment Insurance is temporary income:

  • For eligible workers
  • Who lose their jobs
  • Through no fault of their own
  • To collect benefits, you must be ready, willing, and able to work, and actively looking for work during each week in which you are claiming benefits.

To qualify for Unemployment Insurance benefits, you must have worked and earned enough wages in covered employment. In New York State, employers pay contributions that fund Unemployment Insurance. It is not deducted from your paycheck. The Department of Labor decides if you qualify for benefits.
