The Retirees Association of Suffolk Community College (RASCC) recently issued Legacy Fellowship Grants that will support two projects for the college that will enhance the educational experience for students.

The accepted projects are: The Student Exit Survey, and A Fabric Repaired Helps the Earth to be Spared, a sustainability project.

The Student Exit Survey

Dr. Lauren Tacke-Cushing, AVP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Patty Munsch, Vice President for Student Affairs and Kaliah Green, Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, will participate in the development of a Student Exit Survey, which will collect data from Suffolk students preparing to graduate.  Students will be asked about their student experience and overall satisfaction. The college will also track the institutions students transfer to and/or their employment locations, utilizing this data in program reviews, and for outreach to alumni and employers.

A Fabric Repaired Helps the Earth to be Spared

The proposal by Pamela Lynch, Professor of Biology, and Sheila D. Fox, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Library/Visual Arts, addresses the impact of textile and fashion production on the environment and how the recent trend in “visible mending” can be useful in protecting the environment. The goal of the project is to reduce or slow the production of textiles by repairing clothing items we already have, in order to make them last longer. In addition, this process can create a potential new clothing style to communicate ideas about the future of the planet. Displays around campus will feature the completed works.

Suffolk County Community College’s President, Dr. Edward Bonahue, commented, “We extend our gratitude to the Retirees Association of Suffolk Community College for their devotion to the college and their generosity. This is just one example of how our retired faculty and staff continue to work together to support the ongoing needs of our students.”
