Mirror Lake (2025, digitally printed textile, embroidery, dye, and screenprint on
cotton, 28 x 26 inches) by Sophia Belkin is among the works featured in The Other
Way to Listen, on view March 11 through April 8, 2026, at the Sagtikos Art Gallery
on the Michael J. Grant Campus.
In honor of Women’s History Month, Suffolk County Community College presents The Other Way to Listen, a group exhibition curated by Grace Lerner. The exhibition will be on view from March 11 through April 8, 2026, at the Sagtikos Art Gallery, located in the Sagtikos Arts and Science Building, Room 150, on the College’s Michael J. Grant Campus.
An opening reception will take place on Wednesday, March 11, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Curator Grace Lerner will offer remarks about the exhibition. Light refreshments will be served, and all are welcome.
The Other Way to Listen features work by Sophia Belkin, Nkechi Ebubedike, Haley Josephs, Wen Liu, Ana Mendieta, Sahana Ramakrishnan, and Terumi Saito. The exhibition highlights female artists whose work cultivates an emotional connection to the earth while exploring themes of feminine spirituality, cosmic motherhood, and ancient traditions. Through varied media and approaches, the artists examine how these enduring sources of power resonate within and respond to the modern world.
The exhibition title is inspired by the picture book The Other Way to Listen by Byrd Baylor. Both the book and the exhibition encourage a heightened attentiveness
to one’s surroundings. The artists included in this exhibition remain deeply attuned
to the natural world, and their work emerges from that sustained awareness. Rather
than relying on overt slogans or immediate reactions to political or cultural shifts,
they employ measured, intentional gestures that foreground the earth’s vitality and
the inherited histories, stories, forms of magic, and traditions that shape it.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with Saturday hours
available by appointment. Admission is free. For additional information, please call
(631) 851-6380.
