Suffolk County Community College Hosts 10th Annual Out of the Darkness Walk to Support Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness on May 2

Suffolk County Community College will host its 10th Annual Out of the Darkness Walk on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Ammerman Campus in Selden, and invites community members to participate in this meaningful event supporting suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 10 a.m. at Veterans Plaza.

The walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and brings together students, faculty, staff and community members, including individuals affected by mental health challenges, loss survivors and advocates. Suffolk County Community College is the only college campus on Long Island to host this nationally recognized event.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the college’s participation. Since 2017, Suffolk has raised more than $100,000 for suicide prevention efforts and, last year, ranked 14th nationally in funds raised through the event.

In addition to the walk, the College’s Offices of Mental Health and Wellness Services and Veteran Services will highlight suicide prevention in the veteran community. Activities include the 22 Push-Up Challenge and access to critical resources, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend, walk, and show their support for mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES:
Opening remarks; walk participants and team signage; 22 Push-Up Challenge; interviews with organizers, students and participants.
