The Flecker Gallery, located on the second floor of the Southampton Building on Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus in Selden, will present Timothy Mutzel’s solo exhibition, A Collection of Extinct Creatures in an Extinct Land, from November 16 through December 14, 2026.
Mutzel’s paintings explore the space between abstraction and recognition. His practice draws upon pareidolia—the tendency to perceive familiar imagery within ambiguous forms—and what the artist describes as the “ambiguity of intention.” His compositions suggest landscapes, creatures and bodily forms without settling into a single literal interpretation, inviting viewers to construct their own narratives through the act of looking.
Mutzel’s process is physical and intuitive, combining bodily movement, muscle memory, and imagination. Through layered lines, colors, shapes, and textures, he creates visual environments that reflect his interest in consciousness, memory, and the relationship between internal experience and the world around us.
Raised on a small dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains, Mutzel moved to New York City in 1996 and earned his MFA from Queens College CUNY. He has exhibited his work extensively throughout NYC and currently divides his time between painting, programming, and teaching art as an adjunct professor at SUNY Old Westbury.
An opening reception and artist talk will be held Monday, November 16, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
