The Suffolk County Community College Math Learning Centers empower students to build strong mathematical understanding by providing supportive, accessible, and high-quality learning resources that promote confidence, mastery, and academic success.
Vision
The Suffolk County Community College Math Learning Centers envision a learning community where every student strengthens mathematical proficiency by deepening foundational K–12 skills, achieving lasting mastery of essential concepts.
Goals and Outcomes
Goal:
Provide constructive and productive academic support through a student-centered collaborative process.
Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate improved understanding of course-specific math concepts as measured by post-session reflections.
Students will report increased satisfaction with the clarity, helpfulness, and supportiveness of MLC tutoring services achieving at least 50% satisfaction on surveys.
Tutors will consistently employ student-centered strategies (probing questions, guided problem-solving, collaborative dialogue, as verified through observations or surveys.
Students will show increased use of appropriate support resources
(MLC visits, online tools, workshops) over the semester.
Goal:
Increase students’ confidence in mathematical abilities & promote independent learning strategies
Outcomes:
Students will be able to identify that they learned at least one effective math study strategy by the end of their tutoring sessions.
By implementing professional development for tutors
By adding information to the survey (I learned a new strategy...)
Students will show improvement in critical-thinking behaviors including checking work, reflecting on mistakes, and explaining reasoning.
Students will use MLC-provided learning tools (formula sheets, practice sets, concept maps) and show improved organizational and study habits.
Students will report increased math self-confidence on pre/post surveys after multiple MLC visits.
Goal:
Provide inclusive and equitable support by delivering MLC services that meet the identified needs of students
Outcome:
The MLC will reduce access barriers by offering flexible hours, referrals to other SCCC campus MLCs, varied modalities (in-person/online), achieving increased use.
Goal:
Assist faculty through increased communication and collaboration with departments and services.
Outcomes:
MLC will collaborate with math faculty to align support with course learning objectives documented in meeting notes or shared resource development.
Faculty will report awareness of MLC services measured through faculty surveys or attendance at departmental presentations.
MLC will provide feedback to departments regarding common student challenges, trends, and areas for instructional reinforcement in department meetings
